What is in you that keep you going?

Have you ever asked any of the following questions to yourself?

  • What gives me confidence and courage to start new project/business/initiative?
  • What helps me keep going when times are tough and there is little hope?
  • When chances of success are thin as razor blade, what is in me that tell me, “I am going to be alright…”?
  • What drives my optimism and determination?

Sunday morning, on the way back from Gurudawara (Sikh temple), passing through miles of green farms, cruising under dense clouds and heavy rain, I started asking all these questions to myself.

After thinking a while, I reached to the conclusion that it is my faith that gives me confidence, power and enthusiasm to keep going when times are tough.

Let’s see what Faith actually is and how it has such strong influence on our lives.

By definition, faith is the confidence or trust in a person or thing. It is a belief that is not based on proof. Faith can be associated to an individual, thing or invisible/super power (God).

When we have faith in our self, we are blessed with self confidence and courage. When we have faith in others, we trust others which help to keep our mind at peace. When we have faith in God, it gives us trust that things outside our control will work in our favour. It does not matter at which level or entity our faith is associated to, we are always a winner.

Our faith supports us when data/statistics infers that we are in trouble or when economy, country or life is under threat. It is because our faith ignores; so called facts and ensures us our security. This sense of security helps us to change our attitude; our attitude changes our focus of mind. So, instead of worrying about things outside our control, our mind starts focusing on the goal/need.

So far, a lot has been said and written on power of positive state of mind. For instance, have a look on few incredible quotes:

  • It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.
    Aristotle Onassis
  • Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.
    Thomas Jefferson
  • Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.
    Zig Ziglar

In summary, the above quotes infer that our positive states of mind determine our success. We should not forget that it is our faith that will put our mind in positive state. Our Faith, tells our mind all the good stories of hope, courage and success.

Modern business culture undermines importance of faith. You will not find many organisations that have faith listed under their core values.

Recently, I have also come across video shared on LinkedIn (by Angela Lee Duckworth: The key to success? Grit). Angela advocated that the key to success is your grit. In my opinion, any single factor (like grit) cannot determine your success. However, even if we consider grit as key to success, we cannot be a gritty without faith. In fact, our level of faith will determine our grit.

Now let’s see how can we develop faith. Faith is not a skill that we can learn or train. Faith is also not an emotion, so techniques of learning emotional intelligence is will not work. Faith is more of subtle feeling, a reaction to day to day happening in our life. One of the easiest ways to develop or strengthen your faith is by accompanying people of strong faith. You may ask where I can find these people of strong faith. It is not difficult to find them. They are in your house, friends, family or community.

Look for following characteristics:

  • They stays positive majority of times
  • They are humble
  • They are full of gratitude
  • They will be first one to hold hand of person in need

You know exactly who I am referring to!

When we accompany people of faith with open heart and mind, we are most likely to be blessed with strong faith. It will certainly make remarkable difference in our life.

On that note, what is your experience with faith? Do you think it plays important part in your life? What do you do to strengthen your faith?

I would love to hear from you.
