Imagine I get my house painted, upgrade my car, and get the garden cleaned every five years. However, I do not do any improvements or maintenance work. I am too busy, so when things break, I must seek immediate help to restore them. Now, think of the pathetic condition of the imaginary house I am living in.
The house’s condition depends on my daily maintenance and improvement work. Executing major capital projects and buying new assets after a few years is a waste.
Similarly, any sane organisation would require constant maintenance and improvement work. For instance:
- keeping digital assets up to date,
- maintain the quality of the data,
- improve processes,
- develop new capabilities,
- improve existing capabilities,
- build training material for the employees,
- ensure governance and compliance,
- assuring the safety of stakeholders,
- think about sustainability,
- improve quality, and so on.
Ideally, such Business improvement activities should never stop. Unfortunately, for most organisations, it never starts!
