What Can We Do About Emotional Decision Bias?

Decision making

We often make decisions based on emotions and justify them logically. But what can we do about emotional decision bias?

Consider formally reviewing and refining decisions with a fresh perspective, new data and experience.

Consider the following examples:

  • In the meeting, we decided to pursue the project. However, we will review our decision and clarify our assumptions in the next meeting.
  • We loved the new idea; let us share it with the team and seek their input.
  • We have decided to promote the Sales Manager; let us rethink other implications before formalising our decision.

It may sound to be indecisive. However, we are making critical decisions and sleeping over them to gain fresh insight, perspective and new information. The approach may help us to distil our decisions from emotions and hopefully be supported by logic.
