Progress without a plan is likely to be more drifting and less progress. We may see effort and outcomes but are unaware of direction.
However, we are not designed to plan and implement. If no one mandates a plan, we are likely to continue with no plan.
Perhaps that is why we get away with managing projects without project plans, managing finances without financial plans, managing business without business plans, and managing life without life plans.
Developing plans is painful, but that doesn’t negate their value. Maybe all we need is an accountability partner to keep us honest with our plans and report our progress against them. Perhaps this is a new skill we need to learn. Any action is a good action that leads us to develop plans before any significant undertaking. Otherwise, drifting is a default option that may lead us nowhere.
