It is painful to acknowledge a small project getting out of hand. I have made this mistake a few times. I underestimated the grief a small little project can cause.
The lesson learnt is to manage a small project respectfully and develop a light methodology to manage them.
So, for smaller projects, do not cut corners, follow ad hoc processes, or do them as a side thing. They have the same potential to go south as big projects. Let them lose, and you will see them getting out of hand!
As an executive, the same lesson is valid for you as well. Consider delegating the small projects to a capable resource and ensure they are managed effectively throughout their lifecycle.
