Family businesses, houses, and charitable foundations are signs of the family legacy. For the family, they have a deep meaning and connection. They represent the status and significance of the family. But they are merely symbols. Behind the signs is the family’s grounding—the grounding of high moral ethics, strong principles, hard work, unity, and luck. The symbols carry no value without grounding, and families may even fail to pass them on to the next generation. On the other hand, the same family may establish many more signs of their legacy with a firm grounding.
As business owners and leaders, we often get stuck with such symbols. We will likely be much better off working on our grounding across the organisation instead.
