In business, we undertake three types of work:
- BAU: Business as Usual is the work we do day in and day out. This work may take most of our time, generating predictable value. For example, as a Sales Manager, working on Sales calls and developing a Sales strategy is BAU work.
- Business Improvement: This work primarily looks at the opportunities for improvement. For example, opportunities to cut waste, improve processes, identify opportunities for capital investment, and define project specifications to support decision-making.
- Projects: This work involves implementing projects like a new CRM and developing an employee portal.
As an executive, your challenge is to ensure that all three types of work are balanced in the best possible harmony. It’s easier said than done, but putting effort into perfecting the balance will make all the difference!
