Tension between who we are and who we are becoming

Change Management

The internal conflict we feel is often the tension between who we are and who we are becoming. Change is constant. We are not fixed. Our identity shifts quietly over time, and the friction we experience is the movement between the current self and the emerging self.

If I want to lose weight, I must eat less. The logic is simple. The execution is not. Two identities are present. One enjoys sweets and comfort. The other values discipline and long-term health. The struggle is not about food. It is about which identity takes control.

This pattern appears everywhere. A professional growing into a leader must let go of the identity of being liked by everyone. A new parent must release parts of their old independence. A founder must shift from operator to architect. Each transition requires an internal rearrangement. That rearrangement can feel like doubt, frustration, even crisis.

Many internal battles are simply identity upgrades in progress.

It is neither right nor wrong. It is not something to panic about or suppress. It does not always need fixing. It needs understanding. Go inward. Notice the push and pull. Reflect. Speak with people who see you clearly. Use tools, even AI, to clarify the tension.

Clarity reduces unnecessary suffering. When you see that the discomfort is a signal of evolution, you stop fighting yourself blindly. You start choosing deliberately.

Identity is not destroyed in growth. It is refined.
