AI Amplifies Who We Are

Yesterday, I wrote that being a practitioner is no longer a choice. Leaders who step away from their craft slowly lose touch with reality, and the pace of AI makes that gap grow faster than it used to.

There is a next step to that thought. It is about what AI does with the gap once it is there.

AI is an amplification tool

AI amplifies us. It amplifies our writing, our thinking, our communication, our logic, and various other dimensions of how we work.

It also amplifies who we are at the core.

That second part gets far less attention.

Unless we specifically ask AI to pretend to be someone else, our use of AI is only making us clearer, as who we are as individuals. A thoughtful person using AI produces more thoughtful work, faster. A careful person produces more careful work. The tool does not add a character we do not have. It enlarges the one we bring.

When the words and the artefacts do not match

The same is true in reverse.

If we try to impress while we are out of depth and substance, our AI artefacts will show it. Our words and our artefacts will not match.

Consider a manager who presents a polished strategy paper to the executive team. It is well structured, the language is confident, and all the right terms are there. Then the questions begin. Why this option over the other one? What did the field staff say? What happens if the vendor’s timeline slips? The answers are thin. The paper was produced. The thinking behind it was not.

Before AI, a polished document took real effort, and that effort was a rough signal of understanding. That signal is gone. Anyone can now produce a polished document. So people stop judging the document and start judging the person standing behind it. The distance between the two becomes the thing everyone notices.

AI did not create that distance. It made it visible.

Back to the roots

So it is a great time to connect to our roots. Learn, and keep mastering our domains. Be practitioners. And stop faking it, because AI is only going to amplify that too.

This is where the two ideas meet. In the previous post, staying a practitioner was about keeping our judgement grounded in how things are. Here, it is also about what we feed into the tool. AI amplifies whatever is there. If what is there is real experience, real understanding and real care, that is what gets louder. If what is there is borrowed language and surface confidence, that gets louder instead.

A reset

As we are entering a reset of business domains with the rise of AI, proving our value and taking pride and ownership of who we are is an asset and a value indicator.

When everyone can produce the artefact, the artefact stops being the measure. What remains is the person: their depth, their judgement, their history of having done the work. Those cannot be generated. They can only be built.

It is our time to make it shine and make it count.

Because the alternative is our replacement with an AI agent. If all we bring is what the tool can already produce, there is little reason to keep us in the loop.

Questions to ponder

If AI amplified everything about how you work today, what would become more visible: your substance, or your gaps?

The last time you presented something produced with AI, could you have defended every line of it without the tool beside you?

And which part of your work could only ever have come from you?
