If given the choice, we often lean toward laziness rather than proactivity. We conserve our mental energy and focus on tasks only when they seem significant.
Tasks become meaningful when our name is attached, when we’re clearly accountable for their success, when we have a moral duty to deliver well, and when others are watching.
As leaders, the surest way to get average work from our teams is to assume they’ll do their best if left alone. But if we truly care about delivery, we must make our people accountable for the outcome. Make the tasks their own. Let them announce their involvement and take ownership. Celebrate and mourn alongside them. Offer guidance and support while showing them the bigger picture. Give them reasons to dedicate their energy consistently and invest in the task beyond just the outcome.
