“I don’t care.”
Or a version of it — “Who cares?”
“I don’t give a …”

We say these words more often than we realise.
Sometimes even with pride — enjoying the sense of freedom that comes with them.

But there is something hidden inside those words.

When we say “I don’t care,” we quietly surrender our connection to that thing.
The other side — the event, the person, the issue, the decision — also stops caring about us.

This imagined detachment may feel liberating for a moment.
Yet it can slowly create damage, grief, or despair.

Because the moment we stop caring, we lose visibility.
We lose influence.
We lose the ability to shape the outcome.

This applies everywhere around us:

our employees’ behaviour,
our boss’s attitude,
our company culture,
our relationships,
our customers’ expectations.

The list never ends.

The words “I don’t care” may feel like freedom.
But often they are simply quiet resignation.

So perhaps the better discipline is this:

Don’t casually declare that you don’t care.

Instead, be intentional about what you truly choose not to care about.

Because indifference, when used carelessly, disconnects us from the very things we may later wish we had shaped.
