People are often smart enough to tell us exactly what we want to hear. But once the deal is done, they may revert to doing what they always intended — regardless of whether it helps or harms us. And truthfully, they may not care all that much.
This doesn’t mean they’re evil or malicious. It simply highlights a reality: people can manipulate situations to serve their own objectives. Once they get the green light, they often run on autopilot — executing a script shaped by years, even decades, of habits, beliefs, and experiences. Rarely do they pause to consider the individuals who trusted them with the decision.
So, what can we do?
Instead of relying solely on what people say in the moment, we need to dig deeper — examine their track record, understand their past successes and failures, and look closely at who they surround themselves with.
This matters deeply — whether you’re a retiring Managing Director choosing your successor, a Project Sponsor hiring a Project Manager, or a citizen voting for a leader.
