The whole journey of leadership is to make ourselves redundant. Leadership is about enabling our people to take ownership of the tasks we have been performing (delegation). It is about developing new capabilities (automation and training). Leadership is about holding hands and providing support to help them take charge (Backing). It is about creating trust that we will be there for them when they are in need (Trust). Leadership is about enabling our people to be self-reliant so they may never need us (making ourselves redundant).
This is the journey each of us leaders is on. We may perform different roles (parents, business owners, teachers, and team leaders). We may be at varying levels of maturity, too. But, irrespective of our current situation, we are all in the business of making ourselves redundant.
