Read the signals

Leadership

Life is constantly sending us signals. Our role is not to judge them, but to read them for what they are and respond with the right action.

Problems arise not because signals are wrong, but because we misinterpret them and respond poorly. The signal itself is neutral. It simply points to an imbalance somewhere in the system.

Boredom, for example, is often a signal for creative or meaningful work. When we fail to notice it, we may treat boredom with food or comfort. Over time, a signal for growth quietly turns into weight gain.

Restlessness in a project may signal a lack of challenge or learning. If we are not fully present, we may respond by taking frequent breaks to feel better. Repeated long enough, this pattern leads to disengagement and a slow downward spiral.

Anxiety while presenting or speaking publicly is often a signal of limited exposure, not a lack of confidence. When we label it as “I am not confident” and keep worrying, we reinforce a false narrative. Eventually, that narrative weakens the confidence we already have.

As humans, our responsibility is to catch signals early, interpret them accurately, and respond with appropriate action. That is how systems remain healthy, adaptive, and in balance.

Perhaps all we need is to stay awake and present—to read the signals clearly, and respond with intent rather than habit.
