We are often told that the past creates regret and the future creates anxiety. The antidote, we are told, is to stay fully awake in the present—to observe our thoughts and actions as they unfold.
But the present does not exist in isolation. Our past experiences quietly shape our thinking, our reflexes, and our decisions. Our future aspirations influence what we notice, what we plan, and what we worry about.
So even when we are fully present, we are not free from the past or the future. We live within their shadows, whether we acknowledge them or not.
This is not a question of right or wrong. It is a question of choice. Because the choices we make today—how we think, act, and respond—become the scaffolding on which tomorrow takes shape.
