The Enemy Is Within.

We spend a great deal of our lives guarding against enemies.

We lock our doors. We insure our homes. We protect our savings, our reputations and our positions. We watch competitors, critics and anyone who might take what we have built. Much of our energy goes into keeping what is ours safe from whoever is outside.

Some of that is sensible. But it rests on an assumption we rarely question: that the real threat is out there.

The enemy is not out there. It is within.

The voice that keeps us where we are

The enemy within does not look like an enemy. It does not attack. It does not shout. It speaks quietly, and it sounds a lot like common sense.

It asks you to adapt to the status quo. Don’t push hard. Stay lazy.

It tells you this is not the right time. That things are fine as they are. That effort can wait until conditions are better. That there is no need to stretch, because nothing is forcing you to.

None of these sound dangerous. That is exactly why they work. An enemy outside can be seen and resisted. An enemy within is listened to, because it speaks in our own voice.

Looking for the wrong things in the wrong place

We keep looking for pleasure, happiness and success outside ourselves.

A new role. A bigger client. A better house. The next milestone, after which, we tell ourselves, we will finally feel settled. Each one is pursued with real effort, and each one, once reached, points to the next.

This is not because the things are bad. It is because we are asking them to give us something they cannot give. Pleasure, happiness and success, in the sense that matters, are not stored outside us waiting to be collected.

They are within.

What success actually is

So it is worth asking what success really means.

Success is not in achievement and ownership. Achievement passes. Ownership has to be protected, maintained and defended. Both keep us looking outward, measuring ourselves against what we have done and what we hold.

Success is the acknowledgement that:

I am complete. I have arrived. I am here, ready and open-minded.

That is not complacency. It is the opposite. A person who feels complete does not need the next achievement to prove their worth, so they are free to pursue it for its own sake. A person who has arrived is no longer running from where they are. A person who is here, ready and open-minded, can see clearly, because they are not distorted by the need to get somewhere else first.

Everything is inside. Within.

A familiar pattern

The same pattern shows up in organisations.

Consider an organisation that is frustrated with how slowly things move. Decisions take too long. Projects stall. The usual response is to look outward. A new system. A new structure. A new consultant. A new strategy document.

Each of these is a search outside. Sometimes it helps. Often it does not, because the problem was never outside. It was in the habit of avoiding hard conversations. In the comfort of the way things have always been done. In a quiet agreement, never spoken out loud, not to push too hard.

The new system arrives, and the old habits run inside it. The new structure is drawn, and the same reluctance fills the boxes.

The enemy was within the whole time. No purchase could have removed it.

Going within

We keep protecting our possessions and keeping them safe from enemies. Yet the biggest enemy is within.

There is not a lot of need to go too far outside. There is an immense need to go within, to sort things out.

Going within is harder than going outside. Outside, there is always something to buy, someone to blame, somewhere new to go. Within, there is only ourselves: our laziness, our fears, our comfort with the status quo, and our habit of looking anywhere except here.

But it is also the only place where the work actually gets done.

The questions that remain

Here are some questions to ponder.

What are you currently protecting most carefully, and is it the thing that most needs protecting?

When you think about what would make you successful, does the answer point outside you or within?

And when the voice inside says stay where you are, don’t push too hard, whose interests is it really serving?
