True influence!

Leadership

Imagine walking into an ice cream shop and asking for the price of a double scoop on a waffle cone. The attendant smiles, grabs a tiny spoon, and insists you try their new Wild Berry Mint Choc Chip. You take a taste and ask again for the price. She replies, “$8 — but if you order before 5 PM, I can give it to you for $6.” Then she offers another sample, and as you hesitate to check with your family, she keeps pushing you to make a decision now. You feel cornered, uncomfortable, and want to leave — and never return.

The attendant used every classic sales trick. But most customers don’t want to be trapped — they want to feel value and joy.

The same applies to influence. We often overwork our persuasion muscles, forgetting that people dislike manipulation. We want to arrive at our own conclusions, feel in control, and take pride in their choices.

True influence isn’t about pressure; it’s about presence. It’s the gentle art of directing energy so others can see what we see — the problems they’re in, the opportunities in front of them, and the bigger picture that connects today’s sacrifices to tomorrow’s rewards.

Real influence is born from good intent. When it’s offered with humility, honesty, and no expectation of return, it becomes a shared victory — where everyone wins.
