We must let go!

Leadership

In projects, business, and life, we pass through phases of maturity. Along the way, companions—friends, family, colleagues—walk beside us. Each contributes something distinct, shaped by their skills, interests, and the wiring that makes them who they are.

As we grow, it’s natural to wish they would grow with us. A new stage brings new challenges, and we instinctively look to the people we already trust. The temptation is to push them to “level up.” But pushing rarely works. People aren’t clay we can reshape at will—they are more like trees with deep roots. Growth happens in their season, not ours.

This is why distance appears. Roles shift. Some companions excel when the journey is simple but struggle when the terrain becomes steep. That doesn’t make them wrong—it simply makes them right for a different chapter.

Sometimes separation becomes unavoidable. Painful, yes. Necessary, often.

Our responsibility is not to drag anyone forward. It is to prepare them for change, recognise when their role has shifted, and detach ourselves from the emotional weight of holding on when the future is signalling that we must let go.

Real maturity is learning to honour the chapter someone belonged to, without forcing them into the next one.
