As humans, we are conditioned to blend into our tribe. We follow cultural norms, dress like others, and behave in predictable ways.
When kids or young people resist this pull, parents and leaders often nudge them back in line. Workplaces do the same: every meeting begins and ends the same way, every office feels eerily alike.
But do we really need to start meetings with shallow weather talk? Do we really want rows of pale shirts and dull suits? Do we really want staff who only follow instructions?
What are we losing by creating this sameness?
We may be losing a lot.
We lose voices with diverse thinking. We lose sparks of creativity. We lose the quirky characters who bring fresh ideas and originality.
By forcing everyone to assimilate, we gain little and risk losing too much. Perhaps it’s time to let our people be real, diverse, and even a little weird—because tribes are stronger when not everyone looks, thinks, and acts the same.
