The whole point of communication is to understand each other.
The problem is that it is a difficult task. Here are a few reasons why listening is too difficult:
- It consumes a lot of brain power, and our brain often tends to wander on light topics.
- We seek pleasure and power in telling before listening.
- Stepping in other shoes and seeing the world from another’s perspective is not a skill taught to us.
- We take pride in selling our ideas, solutions, and products while missing out on learning about others’ requirements.
- We lack patience, and while we pretend to know all the answers, there is no time to waste hearing out others (sort of a subtle voice in our head).
