How to Develop Empathy?

Leadership

Some people seem naturally gifted with empathy—they intuitively sense what others feel. Others, however, struggle to connect with emotions outside their own experience. Most of us fall somewhere in between, often wondering how to develop empathy.

If you’re someone who genuinely wants to develop empathy but finds it difficult, this perspective might help:

Imagine two people with the same environment, upbringing, and biology—they could still turn out completely different. That’s the nature of being human. The reason we find others confusing, frustrating, or even admirable is simply because they are not us.

We struggle when others don’t understand us—because they are different.
We find it hard to relate—because they are different.
We feel joy, tension, or conflict—because they are different.

And it’s this very difference that makes the world interesting. Diversity isn’t just a fact of life—it’s what drives growth, creativity, and progress. Empathy starts by recognising this truth.

Simple to say, difficult to live by. Which is why empathy isn’t a one-off act—it’s a practice.
