Would I do it if it were my own money?
Perhaps sincerely asking ourselves this question before proposing a new project, calling a meeting, or entering into an argument would likely change how we act and respond.
We might think twice, or even more, before making spending decisions. We would likely take extra steps to ensure we’re adding real value to the process, cutting waste, and enhancing efficiency at every step.
However, when operating as if it is someone else’s money, we may be more inclined to spend it to look good, win corporate battles, or expand our corporate territories. This is a common occurrence in government departments.
To drive efficiency, improve service delivery, and increase automation, we might need to consider one simple question in our staff: Would I do it if it were my own money?
